Signposts to a brighter future
The content and presentation of Yuti is designed to inform, educate and guide.
Yuti offers a range of content that is broadly educational (some of which can be used by parents or teachers as well as children) in the wider context. It also has a strong social mission, highlighting the common ground between Sri Lanka's different communities in an effort to help overcome the differences between them.
While the target age group for Yuti is 8-14 years, we hope to attract an even wider audience than this;
there will be a wide variety of articles of varying levels of difficulty, some of which will be of interest
to older teenagers.

The tsunami and after

Yuti features content designed specifically to help readers understand the tsunami and its effects, as well as to deal with the trauma and practical problems it generated will form a sizeable part of Yuti. Our approach has been somewhat indirect: a feature on water, its beneficial effects and how it can sometimes get out of control; a story on famous natural disasters around the world, etc. From popular science features to quizzes on 'What to do in an emergency', the potential content here is relatively broad.

Your world & mine
Content under this heading will work to raise readers' consciousness of other peoples and ways of living, both in Sri Lanka and abroad. It will promote a sense of common humanity through understanding and celebrating difference. An illustrated story on 'houses around the world' or instructions on how to make a pen-friend are examples of directly related content; less direct, but still relevant features on geography, history, places, art and music will also play a role. Most issues of Yuti will contain a one-page trilingual dictionary defining important and relevant words appearing in the rest of the magazine. Another important subject field under this heading is sports and games, both Sri Lankan and foreign.

All around us
Content will be designed to broaden readers' understanding of the environment they live in, to enhance their curiosity and encourage them to learn and explore further. Day-to-day objects and activities are described and explained, moving from the familiar to the unfamiliar. Features on animals and plants both popular and exotic, the human body, health and hygiene, the importance of using natural resources with care, etc., will all form part of this content.

The changing world

Content under this heading will introduce readers to aspects of modern life they may not have immediate access to, but which they will need to cope with as they (and their country) move along the road to the future. Subjects include technology, transportation, computers and communications, urban life, money and so on. Some of it will relate to, or be inspired by, recent items in the news. Much of the content will have a practical slant: how to open a savings account at a bank, for example.

Growing up and taking charge
This is a heading under which content is particularly diverse: everything from a regular feature on occupations (farming, driving a train, becoming a scientist) to articles in which civic rights and obligations are discussed simply. Stories from Sri Lankan and world history, on common values shared by various religions, inspiring profiles of famous people and many other subjects fall under this heading.

Interactivity

Wherever possible, features will contain suggestions for further reading, little experiments children can do, things to make and do, games, puzzles and so on. Each issue will also carry a little quiz, Do you remember?, that tests them on their knowledge and understanding of the issue's contents. The completed quiz can be submitted to Yuti, which will award small prizes for a fixed number of all-correct entries on a first come-first served basis
